How Sedation Dentistry Can Help Your Dental Anxiety

A woman relaxes in the dental chair after receiving dental sedation.

When you think about going to the dentist, do you feel a powerful sense of dread? Does your heart start pounding faster? Dental anxiety is very common. Some people can work through it, but for others, it’s severe enough to keep them from getting necessary dental care. Thankfully, sedation dentistry can ease your nerves.

How does sedation dentistry help with anxiety?

Sedation dentistry is a great choice for anxious patients and patients who can’t sit still for a long time, who have sensitive teeth, or who have a strong gag reflex. At our office, we use nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oral conscious sedation.

  • Nitrous Oxide

  • Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative you inhale through a nose mask. The calming effects kick in right away. Even though you’re awake during treatment, you’ll feel peaceful and relaxed. Once the mask is removed, the gas wears off quickly. Most people can return to their normal activities without a problem.

  • Oral Conscious Sedation

  • For those who need a stronger sedative, oral conscious sedation is given as a pill you take a set amount of time before treatment. You may fall asleep during your appointment, but we can easily wake you up if we need to talk to you. Because oral conscious sedation is stronger, you should have someone drive you home. Take the rest of the day to recover and avoid driving or making big decisions for the next 24 hours.

Is sedation dentistry safe?

For most people, sedation dentistry is safe. You may experience side effects like headaches, nausea, dizziness, and dry mouth. It’s more common to experience side effects with oral conscious sedation. We always examine your medical history – including any medications you’re taking – before recommending sedation dentistry.
