What is halitosis?

Simply put, halitosis is bad breath. Bad breath is often the result of bacteria in the mouth, but some medical conditions can also cause it.

What are the causes of halitosis?

Halitosis can be one or a combination of many factors. When you eat, the food is broken down in your mouth and then moves into the body. If the foods have a strong odor, the odors can hang around until the food completely passes through your body, affecting the air you exhale. Some specific causes of halitosis are:

  • Garlic
  • Alcohol
  • Gum Disease
  • Considerable Plaque Build-Up
  • Xerostomia (Dry Mouth)
  • Poor Brushing and Flossing Technique
  • Neglecting to Brush and Floss
  • Improperly Cleaned Oral Appliances like Dentures
  • Respiratory Tract Infections
  • Gastrointestinal Issues
  • Liver and Kidney Problems

Good oral hygiene habits at home can help prevent and fight halitosis. If we determine that the cause of your halitosis isn’t something we can treat in-house, we may refer you to your doctor or a medical specialist for further examination and treatment.
